Ok its been a great year so far in 2011 and so much has happened. The show has gone from strength to strength and looks like it will keep on building with such a great fan base. The Cirque Du Vampires Rock at Nottingham arena just blew me away, it couldnt have gone any better. We had a few last minute problems with the lighting rig but we managed to put a great show on regardless. The high flying act was a real show stopper and not forgetting the Thriller routine with the amazing kids from the Tracey Quale School of dance in Nottingham. We now have three arena dates for the Carnival Du Vampires Rock and we will be taking the show on into new 2012 season.

Showline up
The show will see new members joining the cast this year with a great new addition on drums Chris Reed. Chris comes from a great rock background playing in some of the countries best touring bands and we are all really happy to be working with him this year. Some other changes will be made through the year with rotation of band and cast members to ensure we keep the show fresh and as engergetic as it has always been.

What another great year for the Rockman Company.

Massive thank you to all the fans who never stop supporting me and the shows. With the 2011 season only just around the corner we are busy in the Rockman office getting the new tour dates confirmed for the next Vampires Rock tour.

We are planning on doing more Cirque shows next year so keep an eye on the dates for that.

Cast Changes

The biggest news for 2011 is the introduction of a new Pandora. Emily has decided to move on and try other projects and we wish her all the best.

Emily has been a key performer and friend for the past four years and she will be surely missed.

The young lady who will take the roll of Pandora is Hayley Russell a little Rock Chick I discovered some time ago. I know you will all make her welcome and also wish Emily all the best.

What an amazing night at the Nottingham Arena, I couldn’t have asked for more.

The day started very early for the crew, but with 4 trucks to unload they had their work cut out getting all this done in the time we had. I also had my work cut out as we had so much new stuff in the show and no time to rehearse it other than the sound check.

For those who didn’t get to see the show, we had two very talented aerial acts who set the show off with a bang as the curtain dropped to reveal them hanging by a silk rope, only to drop like a bat out of hell just stopping inches from the floor.

Chloe my dancer has been training hard to use the fire in her act and she was equally as impressive working with the aerial acts on Hells Bells.

Probably the best thing I managed to do was a massive routine to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Tracy Quaife Dance School in Nottingham put on a superb performance and the kids really were amazing.

Also making her debut was a young dancer Sharnelle Guest who I spotted when I visited the dance school to see the guys rehearsing for the show. She stood out and I gave her the opportunity to open the show in one of the Vampires Rock famous cages. It was like going back in time when I first met Shereen when she was also just 18 years old. Also a newcomer was Bex in the other cage who also did me proud and rocked it up big time. The band and dancers, along with Em and John doing some great vocals, just seem to get better and better, and the bigger the venue the better they play and perform.

I think this is probably my best work to date, it was really special and I hope that we can do this again soon.

I would just like to thank everyone involved, from the crew to sound and lights, my office staff Jane and Nicky, plus all involved in the show, just too many to list, but they know who they are and how much we all at Rockman appreciate their hard work.

Rock Star 2 Soap Star!

Steve Steinman well known for his rock musical theatre productions Vampires Rock and Bat Out Of Hell The Symphony is about to add a new string to his bow.

Whilst performing the lead role in the hit musical Bad Boy Johnny earlier this year Steve was spotted by top acting and theatrical agent Elizabeth Stocking of Narrow Road London and Manchester. Elizabeth is credited with placing some of our best known soap stars in programmes such as Coronation Street, Emerdale and Shameless just to name three.

Elizabeth says Steve is a natural actor you believe what he’s saying and that’s not as easy as you may think. With Steve’s look and talent I don’t think it will be long before you will be seeing Steve very soon on some of our favoute soaps and even the big screen. Having met Steve now many times I would be correct in saying what ever Steve puts his mind to he will achieve it, watch this space.

Steve says he’s really excited about the prospect of acting but says he will never stop performing on stage as this is his true love. I’ve been touring and performing now for nearly twenty years so to have a top agent like Elizabeth think I am good enough its a real thrill and compliment.

200 Shows!

Ok its been one hell of a year so far with Vampires Rock running into Feb and then talking the Musical Bad Boy Johnny on tour. We then went straight into Bat the Symphony and we finished at the Rock N bike festival with Vampires Rock on 17^th July.

Here’s a few shots of the Rock N Bike its was a great night with over five thousand rock fans giving it there all. The festival had seen a 50% increase this year so we would like to think this is down to Vampires Rock and the great fans we have.

Its time for our break now over the summer but we will be back soon with a great tour starting at the Majestic theatre Retford on the 17^th Sept. We have 60 dates from then until Feb 2010 and they should all now be on sale.

OVER the last few years Steve Steinman has travelled the country entertaining fans of Meatloaf with his spectacular shows - and his latest
visit to Ipswich on Saturday was another great success. For the second year running, Steve brought along an orchestra to give the whole show more of a dramatic theme.

Last year I sometimes got the feeling that he didn't know what to do with the orchestra - but this year there were no such doubts. From the opening with Life Is A
Lemon, starting behind a screen with two dancers drumming, through to the last strains of Bat Out of Hell the orchestra was an integral part of the whole show.
Looking back at my review last year, the highlights were essentially the same - a stunning version of For Crying Out Loud to finish the first half and the dramatic Paradise By
The Dashboard Light. But while they are clearly huge favourites with the fans, it would be good to vary the content slightly. I'd love to hear him perform Rock ana Roll Dreams Come Through and
Lost Boys and Golden Girls from Bat II, and how about including more from some of Meatloaf's "non-Bat" albums? But they are really minor points.

SteveSteinman and his team did what they do best and brought Meatloaf's songs out of the car stereo and on to the stage. The songs are theatrical and Steve
certainly provided drama - and masses of humour. He was supported, as ever, by the amazing Emily Clark who seems to embody the very essence of a rockchick
while possessing an astonishingvoice. She duetted with Steve on several numbers including Deadringer and ,YouTook the Words Right Out Of My Mouth before giving us a solo
version of It's All Coming Back to Me Now from Bat III . The show has built up a strong local following and many of the fans keep coming back for more .
They might not dress up like they do for Steve Steinman's other regular, Vampire's Rock later this year but they are just as enthusiastic. "Wenever miss it . We've made
friends with some of the band," said one group from Ipswich at the bar. And the audience was a mixture of ages - from a few youngsters to more than a handful of grandparents
who were presumably hooked by Meatloaf's first album in the late 1970s. I've heard the latest Meatloaf live tracks, released as part of his Hang ' Cool Teddy Bear album and must
say that, for fans of classic Meatloaf, Steve Steinman sounds more like the Texan superstar than he does himself.

It was a great show - and the fans will be looking forward to seeing him again at Halloween and and hopefully another Meatloaf show this time next year

REVIEW: Bat Symphony, Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Friday 4th June 2010 by Reg Enderby, Editor, The Nottingham Gig Guide

I caught up with Bat producer and lead vocal Steve Steinman for an interview and pint just before tonight’s Nottingham show at a bar frequented by theatre goers just over the road from the concert hall. Steve tells me they are almost at the end of the tour and the cast have jelled nicely. There have been a few comings and goings, but with such a large cast this is inevitable, but I am told this is not a problem with the orchestra. They are all classically trained to the highest level in their instruments of choice and it is just a case of putting the music in front of them. The backbone of the band however has been together for some time touring with Steinman’s established show Vampires Rock.

But it was as a Meatloaf tribute act that Steinman first came to notoriety with the Meatloaf Story which toured the UK theatres for many years telling the story of Meatloaf with the aid of video screens, backing music and wigs your rock chic sister would wear, with Steinman himself donned in the most horrific Meatloaf looky likey wig, the only advantage being, never being recognised in public. Sitting in the outdoor bar with Steve it soon became apparent he was being recognised by passers by as the lead and Meatloaf performer even though he was proudly sporting a shiny bald head. Steve explains the wig has gone and this is not a looky likey show, it is a celebration of Meatloaf songs performed and staged as never done before, not even by Meatloaf himself…. Tell me more I ask, but I get a rhetorical no, you’ll just have to wait and see the show….. ok pints downed it was time for some meat in the sandwich.
Fully seated and full of anticipation, the curtains opened and I must say it was an amazing spectacle that greeted my eye line. A 3 tiered stage with the band on level one, backing vocals, dancers, drums, saxophone and violin on level 2 and finally raised in the gods, the orchestra with more instruments than I could count, complete with white suited conductor, the renowned Greg Francis.

From then on it was a nonstop barrage on the senses as hit after hit was belted out by this huge cast of performers in a spectacle of sound, lighting and effects that had the hairs raised on the back of my neck. “Paradise By The Dash Board Light”, “Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth”, “Anything for Love” and the grand finale “Bat Out Of Hell” had the audience on their feet and begging for more and all done with not a wig in sight.

I saw Meatloaf at Nottingham Arena last year and it has to be said I was disappointed with his performance and the lack of showmanship. His small band, aging vocals and poor sound were a sad reflection on one of music’s greatest mega stars. I am pleased Steinman has taken his show by the scruff of the neck and brought it right back into the 21st century and for half the seat price and twice the entertainment, I know where I will be seated next time.

Rock musical supremo Steve Steinman talks to Viv Hardwick about buying the world rights to touring show Bad Boy Johnny

STEVE Steinman didn’t realise he was dyslexic until he was in his forties and now appreciates it was the reason he was artistic in other areas… leading to a 20- year performing career as the UK’s top name in Gothic rock musicals.

Having started out as a tribute act with the Meatloaf Story, the producer and performer of Rockman Music gained cult status as Baron Von Rocukula in the constantly touring Vampires Rock and has now gained the rights to Australian rock musical Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom – which plays Darlington Civic Theatre on April 15-17.

“When I first started I was doing Meat Loaf covers and there was nobody doing anything with the music I liked and now I’ve got three of the biggest touring rock shows in the country.

“I feel I’m on my own and I’ve got no competition and I think we do it well, which is why there’s no competition. I think we do it so well that others think ‘what’s the point?’ It was risqué for most people and I kinda like that,” he says.

Steinman took 12 months to negotiate a deal with Bad Boy Johnny writer Daniel Abineri, who played Frank N Furter in the West End’s Rocky Horror Show for 13 years, after Abineri read about Steinman in a newspaper article.

“He wanted that rock n rock feel rather than that West End sparkly thing and featuring a proper rock band. He came to see Vampires Rock and thought we were perfect. I’ve bought the world rights to it now and the idea is to have a London run so that everybody in the world knows about it. To reach America and Australia, you have got to have come out of the West End. So we can go to London for a short run and then take on the world,” says Steinman of the 1989 show which, until now, is most famous for giving Russell Crowe one of his first big breaks in musicals.

A two-day showcase in London on May 1-2 will decide if Bad Boy Johnny joins the current West End line-up.

“For a new production it’s going incredibly well. If people are talking about Russell Crowe it’s helping and it was a long time ago that he played the role of Johnny. My part, and the one I’ve always wanted to play is Father Maclean the evil priest and the show is so on the ball at the moment because it features problems for the Pope and the choice of a new one linked to an X-Factor show. It’s incredible how this has all played into our hands,” Steinman laughs.

He finds becoming a stage baddie quite easy but “the hard bit is that there is a lot of scripted stuff and more than I’m used to as a singer in a rock show”.

Steinman’s easiest task was finding his own Russell Crowe to play Johnny because the lead role has been taken by his Vampires Rock guitarist Henry Bird who is starring alongside well-known Teesside musical star Dawn Spence as Johnny’s mother, Mary.

“Henry’s the first Bad Boy Johnny who does look and sing like a rock star and plays a guitar like a rock star. I had all the cast I required so that made life easier for me. We drafted in Dawn who is a West End favorite and has come out of Chicago and she brings real class to the show,” he says.

Asked about his relationship with Meat Loaf, the US performer born Marvin Lee Aday, Steinman says: “He’s a funny fella because I have worked with his band and I know them well. I’ve met him a few times but I wouldn’t say I’d got his phone number in my mobile shall we say. I’ve currently got a Bat Symphony tour with myself and an orchestra and I don’t try to be Meat Loaf and I’ve got an audience who like to see me perform his songs. At the end of the day the songs are not his but belong to Jim Steinman,”

says Steinman of the US record producer and composer with the same surname.

“People think Jim Steinman is my uncle and I just smile and say ‘yes’. He’s another strange one but I’m pretty sure that people like him follow who is doing their songs using the internet,” says the UK Steinman who says that the current female fascination with vampires also hasn’t done his touring shows any harm.

“Every time you turn the telly on or go to the cinema there’s a vampire thing on. Again, I started Vampires Rock eight years ago, just at the right time,” he adds.

Steinman reckons the current recession is nowhere near as bad as in 1992 when his bank pulled the plug on the finance he needed to fund a £100,000 loan to expand the pub he’d inherited from his father.

“Interest rates were 17-and-ahalf per cent and this current recession, to me, is nothing. It’s child’s play really apart from dragging on a little bit. The good thing is that I’ve created shows that people still want to see so I’ve been able to ride through it really,” he says.

So instead of a gastro pub the UK got extra Meat Loaf.

Before he became famous: Fresh-faced Russell Crowe as a thin twenty-something on stage for the first time

The fresh-faced actor hardly looked like a burly Gladiator as he made his stage debut after a string of odd jobs, including a failed attempt as a bingo caller.
Believe or not, this is the first glimpse of the Russell Crowe years before he collected an Oscar for his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius.
For the first time, composer Daniel Abineri has revealed how he gave a 22-year-old Crowe his big break just weeks after the notoriously fiery star was sacked as a bingo caller for being rude.

Detailing the truth behind Crowe’s rise to fame, Mr Abineri told how he gave the wannabe a starring role in his musical Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom - a show that later got banned from the British stage - until he was forced to axe him because the actor could not sing.
Mr Abineri, 51, first met Crowe, who is about to make his return to the big screen as Robin Hood, while he was looking for performers to join him in a New Zealand touring version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Crowe, now 45, was born in New Zealand, but spent part of his childhood in Australia before returning with his family to Auckland aged 14.

And in a revealing interview with the Daily Mail, the former actor reminisced about his six-month stint on the road with Crowe, saying: ‘We held an open call in Auckland to find people to join the Rocky Horror Show.
‘There was this guy standing there dressed head to toe in black leather, with a big quiff. He was very surly and I asked him ‘what’s your name’ and he told me ‘Russ Le Roq’ – that was his stage name

‘He had just been sacked from his job as a bingo caller in Rotorua - apparently he was rude to the crowd when he was calling out the numbers, and he was quite proud of that!
‘The most experience he had before that was appearing in his school production of Grease. He was in a band called Roman Antix and had released a single called I Just Want To Be Like Marlon Brando, who was his hero.’
He added: ‘There was definitely something about Russell, so I gave him the part of Eddie/Dr Scott.
'He was extremely determined and really into his character. At one point during the tour, I told him his character had been based on Doctor Strangelove – so we then discover Russell has painted his face white and turned his hair grey for the role.
‘He was so ambitious. He would watch everything the actors did and soaked it in. I had to tell him to change his name – he called himself Russ Le Roq because he was worried that his famous cousins, the Australian cricket stars Martin and Jeff Crowe would overshadow his attempts to make it as an actor.
‘But I told him Russell Crowe was a great name for an actor.’
Following the tour, Mr Abineri returned home to Sydney in Australia, only for Crowe to move in with him.
He laughed: ‘Russell had no flat, no where to live, no where to sleep, barely any money, so we allowed him to stay until he got his own place.’

At the same time, Mr Abineri was writing his musical, Bad Boy Johnny, which follows the fortune of Johnny, who is born to single mother and part-time prostitute Mary.
Johnny goes on to steal his first guitar and form a band which is then discovered by evil parish priest Father MacLean.
The show then takes a darker turn as Johnny is voted as the person the world would like to see as the new Pontiff on an X Factor-style show – before discovering MacLean raped his mother and is in fact his father.
Mr Abineri said: ‘Russell was around the whole time I was writing Bad Boy Johnny and when finally we got the backing to stage it he kind of sidled up to me and said ‘Hey, could I play Johnny?’
‘He sang for me, but he just sounded like an Elvis impersonator, the voice wasn’t great, but he had a lot of charisma.

‘Russell was obsessed with Elvis and John Lennon and even had their posters up on his wall.’
With Crowe in the lead role, the production launched in Australia in 1989. However, just six weeks later, a concert promoter agreed to a bigger tour.
But there was just one problem – the promoter told Mr Abineri he had to sack Crowe.
The composer said: ‘I was really given no choice.
‘After the initial run, the promoter said I had to get rid of him, that was the deal. It was with great regret, because Russell had become a friend.’
He added: ‘I had to call Russell up, he was really upset. But it worked out for the best because a couple of days later he got a role in his first film, The Crossing, where he met his wife Danielle Spencer, so things definitely worked out for the best.’

British-born Mr Abineri then moved back to London, where he hit the headlines – and earned the wrath of the Church Council of Great Britain alongside death threats from Opus Dei - when Bad Boy Johnny was forced off the stage.
The composer mounted the show as a five week limited showcase run at The Union Chapel in January 1994, but it was deemed as ‘offensive and blasphemous’, not least because the chapel was deconsecrated.
After the intervention of the Church Council the production closed down after nine performances.
However, this Spring the show is being revived for a nationwide tour.
Speaking about his various jobs, which included bartending and waiting to bingo-calling and horse-wrangling, Crowe has admitted: ‘I enjoyed all those jobs, You have to. If you're a waiter, the worst thing you can do is go to work resenting your job.

‘This will sound trite - but it's the reality, and part of my personality - yet when I was a waiter I tried to be the best waiter and when I was a bingo-caller I tried to be the best bingo-caller.’
While his sister-in-law admitted: ‘Russell used ruder versions of the bingo calls. His bosses failed to see the funny side and booted him out.’
The last time Mr Abineri saw Crowe was at the Brit Awards in 2000 and he said: ‘We talked about our touring days, he was friendly - I’m sure he didn’t hold anything against me!
‘I always thought it was something he kept buried in his past – but I was stunned when someone sent me a clip of Russell talking about Bad Boy Johnny last year on the Craig Ferguson show in America. Craig had been the priest in the UK show. I couldn’t believe it.

Just finished the first week of rehearsals for BBJ its been intense that’s for sure. I have so many lines in this show I wake up at 5am with BBJ songs and script going through my head.

Its been superb working with Dawn Spence she rely has raised the bar for us all re the acting side of things. Its my first real acting part believe it or not were Im being directed and not the one doing the directing.

Reenie has done a great job working all the moves out and its looking slicker by the day. Henry is unreal and plays Johnny the way it was supposed to be, he is a star. All the girls have rely up there game and all of them are great.

Ok its about 6.30 so I better try and go get some rest we are loading in on Sunday to do a week in the theatre for the production side and costume runs. Hope you all enjoy the show and thanks for the support in this new venture.

Hi my fellow ROCKERS! and Happy New Year!

Well 2010 has started off very cold and snowy; let’s hope it doesn’t last long before I have to hit the road again with the next run of Vampires Rock dates.

2010 has some great things in store for me and my shows. We kick off the year with Toyah at The Grove Theatre in Dunstable and we finish the run at The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on the 12th February. Vampires Rock will be back in September for the new tour but I’m afraid to say without Toyah as The Devil Queen. It has been an amazing time performing with Toyah, and she really has taken well to the show, but I can say it won’t be the last time you see her in the show. I’m hoping for some new celebrity guest appearances but will let you know as they confirm.

We also have the very exciting Cirque Du Vampires Rock playing at The Nottingham Trent FM Arena on the 30th October. Tickets are now on sale so don’t delay this will be a very special night.

Bad Boy Johnny rehearsals will kick off in February leading us into the first show at The Majestic Theatre in Retford. This is where we opened for Vampires Rock all those years ago so let’s hope BBJ can attract the same following. We have a great cast for BBJ and I am just in talks with a very talented actress to come and join us, as soon as I can confirm I will post her name. Tickets are selling really well for the show and this is very promising and mainly down to the fans for supporting what I do.

We are ending the tour in London and will have a star studded night with many top TV celebs coming to the show. Fingers crossed we may just get the show into London for a run and not forgetting we will be going back to Oz at some point.

Bat the Symphony takes off just after the BBJ tour and we are really looking forward to another great year. We have Greg Francis again who will head up this incredible orchestra and we have plans to take the show to Europe in 2011.

We have some exciting shows planned for 2010 with the possibility of some more arenas with a twist on the Vampires Rock formula that I know you will all love keep watching this space.

Well it seems like ages since I did a news letter. It’s just been such a hectic time with the Vampires Rock tour in full swing and at the same time launching Bad Boy Johnny. Vampires Rock is selling out again this year and we have been able to ad some new venues to the tour like the Corn Exchange in Cambridge. What a great venue and to see a new venue full to the rafters was a great feeling.

Toyah is doing another superb job this year and has really gone up a gear, must be something in the water! We have a great team this year with Scott and Pearce back stage, Rob on lights for another tour and Gary heading up the sound. We also have a great new driver for the artic, the artic has never looked so clean and polished thanks to Ian Heffernan. Ian worked for me some years back when I had a tour bus so it was great to get him back on board for the next few tours. Believe me it’s very hard to get great staff and I have some of the best this year.

The biggest change this year for Vamps is losing Stringfellow, this did cause me a few headache’s but the answer was right under my nose with our stage manager John. John was a pro singer for ten years and he worked with me way back when I had a hotel restaurant in the North of England before my singing days. John jumped at the chance to take on the role and he’s nailed it even better than I could have hoped for. On merchandise this year we have my neice Becky who’s doing a great job for us and brings that bit of glamour to the stall that it needs.

All the band are the same this year and doing a great job as always but we have given Henry a song at the end of the last set performing a track from Bad Boy Johnny. The song is going down so well I think we have a new star in our midst. Ok that’s all for now back on the road again see you all soon.

Vampires Rock will soon have a new website coming live, it is currently under development.

We will have new features and extra downloadable content for the fans.
It should be alot easier to navigate round and run allot faster.

First Bad Boy Johnny Newsletter

Hi and welcome to the first ever BBJ news letter. Over the coming months the web site will grow and information will be posted on a regular basis. We are all very excited about this show and are really looking forward to the tour.

The dates will be posted very soon and as soon as I get confirmation we will get them up and on sale. The tour will be in March and April 2010 and then we hope this will grow in 2011 taking in many new venues up and down the country.

I will be working with the creator of the show Daniel Abineri who wrote the show while he was working in the Rocky Horror show as Frank - N – Furter. The concept is very cool and funny and is full of great original songs. I am hoping to record some of the tracks this summer and get them on line for you all.

Henry will be playing Bad Boy Johnny a part I believe was made for him and I will be playing the evil Father Mclean the priest from hell! A part made for me I think. Also Emily has a great part as Desire the seductive girlfriend of Johnny. We are also in the process of casting Mary, Fortune and Pope Liberty along with the chorus line. The music will be headed up by my band with Nickky on drums Arthur on keys and Jordan and Ben guitar and bass.

Vamps Tour Underway

Well the tour is truly underway and what a great start with sell out shows.

We have some great new songs in the show and unreal pyrotechnics. Just one cast member change this year but the new Janitor character is going down a treat.

The tour really kicks in now when we head up to Scotland and move into October. All the merchandise can be bought at the venues and we have a great deal with the new DVD featuring Toyah.
